Suddenly, traditional cotton has gone hi-tech.
New developments that add functional properties, like a self-cleaning treatment from Hap Co. Ltd. (Japan) or a finish that keeps cotton fabrics from becoming transparent when wet (ideal for whites), are getting people to rethink what they used to think about cotton.
Then there are the new sustainable solutions, such as Solucell yarn from BYR (China) that has replaced its typical PVA core with one that “when dissolved out it is not polluting,” said Lorenzo Rescali, speaking to Inside Fashion at the recent Cotton Council International (CCI) Sourcing Fair.
Mills said that new developments in bi-stretch are becoming bestsellers for the mainstream market. “People are looking to bi-stretch for comfort. Our bestselling denim is super stretch (40-60% stretch),” said Sabina Velasquez at Envoy Textile (Bangladesh).
Adding new functions to cotton is likely to be exactly the winning formula for today’s market, combining four top consumer ‘wants’: natural fiber, soft hand feel, machine washable and added performance.
